Business License Inspections
Has you business applied for a new business license in Clark County? Has you business changed locations?
Have you changed the current filing type of your license (Sole proprietor to LLC) or added people as owners or
officers?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, you will be required by Clark County Ordinance to have a fire
inspection prior to the issuance of your license. If you have applied for a new license or made changes to an
existing one and have not received a copy of your new license, it is most likely because your license has never
been approved and is still pending.
You can check the status of your license by checking the Clark County Web Site:
If you business license status is "pending approval" or "pending approval - doing business" you will be required
to have a fire department inspection prior to approval. Clark County Code states that this process should take
no more than 45 days, but some licenses can be pending for longer than that. Usually an inspector from the fire
department will show up randomly to complete the inspection. If your business is cited with any violations, it will
further delay the approval process because of the time needed to schedule for a re-inspection from the already
busy fire department.
First Response Fire Department can help you to get ready for your fire department inspections. The last thing
you want is for your inspector to come out and find violations at your location. The number one violation is
failure to provide maintenance on fire protection equipment.
Follow these helpful hints to help be prepared for your inspection. We have only listed some of the most
common violations and you should be aware that there additional requirements, as defined by the currently
adopted version of the fire code. Each fire department jurisdiction will have it's own requirements or
stipulations, but the information contained here should be a useful starting place for eliminating fire hazards at
the workplace.
First Response's Safety Checklist
Fire Protection System Maintenance
 | | Fire extinguishers must have a tag on them that shows their |
| | maintenance date. Any new extinguishers are only good for the year in which they were manufactured.
|
 | | There must be at least 1 fire extinguisher for every 3,000 square feet OR |
| | within 75 feet of travel distance for ordinary hazard areas.
|
 | | Fire Extinguishers must be mounted on the wall with the top no higher than |
| | 5 feet.
|
 | | All exit signs and emergency lighting must be maintained in properly |
| | functioning order.
|
 | | All other fire protection systems must be tagged as well, including fire |
| | sprinkler systems, fire alarm and monitoring panels, Ansul and other brand kitchen fire suppression systems
|
 | | Kitchen hoods that are exposed to grease laden vapors must be |
| | professionally cleaned.
|
General Safety Checklist
 | | Premise identification must be provided to ensure that your location can be |
| | found in an emergency. Your building must be marked with the address on it and the suite number on individual doors. The size of the lettering varies depending on the distance.
|
 | | There must be fire department access if your building is more than 150 feet |
| | from the street. Fire lines must be provided and maintained with at least 20 feet width and 15 feet height.
|
 | | Fire Hydrants must be operational and functioning. If the hydrant is red, it is |
| | a private hydrant and it's maintenance is required to be performed by the owner. If it is yellow, it is public and is maintained by the local authority.
|
 | | Your business must be free from any holes in the wall or ceilings, including |
| | that all ceiling tiles must be in place. These building elements have been included into the fire resistive composition of the structure. Any holes in walls, ceilings, or floors will allow a means for fire to spread secretly within the building.
|
 | | Means of egress must be provided for people within the location. Aisles must |
| | remain clear of obstructions at all times and all emergency exit hardware is maintained functional at all times.
|
 | | The use of electrical extension cords is permitted only for temporary |
| | applications. You may not use extension cords as a permanent power source. Surge protectors are allowed, however linking multiple surge protectors together is not allowed.
|
 | | All electrical plate covers must be in place throughout the building. The main |
| | electrical control panel must be accessible with 36" of clearance around. All electrical switches within the panel must have covers (blanks).
